What is a Check Engine Light Decoding service?

Lube Stop’s Check Engine Light Decoding service is the inspection of the dashboard warning light indicating that the engine is having issues.  Lube Stop technicians use a decoder to decipher the code related to the warning.  This is done through a device that is connected to the associated computer electronics in the car.  Once the issue is determined, Lube Stop will advise the customer accordingly.

What is an Engine Light Decoding for?

The check engine light, more formally known as the malfunction indicator lamp, is a signal from the car’s engine computer that something is wrong.

History

The major automakers started standardizing their systems in 1996 under a protocol called OBD-II, which instituted a list of diagnostic trouble codes and mandated that all cars provide a universal connector to access this information.  The connector is usually located under the steering column and is relatively easy to access.  Before 1996, carmakers had their own engine diagnostic systems, primarily to ensure their cars were compliant with EPA pollution control requirements.

What to Look for

Check engine lights come in orange, yellow, or amber, depending on the manufacturer.  If the light begins flashing, however, it indicates a more serious problem, such as a misfire that can quickly overheat the catalytic converter.  These emissions devices operate at high temperatures to cut emissions but can pose a fire hazard if faulty.  So, that would initiate a blinking light versus an issue less serious in nature.

Some drivers may confuse the service required or maintenance required light on the gauge cluster for the check engine light.  These warning lights are unrelated.  The service required light just means the car is due for an oil change or other routine care.  It is not an indicator of trouble like the check engine light is.

Examples

Examples of some of the most common parts that need replacing as per the check engine codes are listed below.

  • ignition coil and spark plugs
  •  oxygen sensors
  • catalytic converter
  • gas cap
  • ignition coil
  • evaporation emissions purge control valve
  • mass airflow sensor
  • evaporation emissions purge solenoid
  • fuel injector
  • thermostat

Occasionally, the check engine light comes on when nothing is wrong with the vehicle.  Temporary problems caused by a change in humidity or other factors can trigger this.  In these cases, the light should go off by itself after a short time.

Context for these Services

Combustion Engine

Your vehicle uses an internal combustion engine.  This engine uses the combustion of fuel to power almost everything.  This is done when fuel alongside an air oxidizer and spark plugs creates a working fluid flow circuit inside a combustion chamber.

In your internal combustion engine, the expansion of the high-temperature and high-pressure gases produced by combustion applies direct force to some component of the engine.  The force is applied typically to pistons, turbine blades, rotors and nozzles.  This force moves the component over a distance, transforming chemical energy into useful work.

Typically, your combustion engine is fed with fossil fuels like natural gas or petroleum products such as gasoline, diesel fuel or fuel oil.  Your engine is the hub for many things, including those listed below.

  • combustion chamber
  • cylinder head
  • camshaft
  • set of spark plugs
  • valvetrain
  • valves
  • rocker arms
  • pushrods
  • lifters
  • fuel injectors
  • pistons
  • connecting rods
  • engine block
  • crankcase
  • crankshaft
  • timing system
  • timing chain
